All sorts of monsters lurk in the dark. And if he's a monster, then we'd better finish him off while he's asleep.
— Gin uttering his desire to silence Kogoro Mouri, Episode 864

Gin (ジン, Jin?), an Executive Member of the Black Organization, is an antagonist in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan.

Background[]

As the intermediary between the Boss and other members of the Black Organization, Gin often gives orders and supervises the syndicate's group operations. Despite being an Executive Agent, he often takes to the field to complete business transactions and assassinate target people. During missions, Gin is frequently paired with Vodka and seems to be able to communicate freely with the Boss.

Four years ago prior to the current timeline, Gin and Vodka went to investigate the syndicate's new member Rena Mizunashi when the tracker placed on her indicated that she was in a warehouse where she should not be. At the time, Rena Mizunashi was meeting with her father and fellow CIA Agent, Ethan Hondou. Anticipating this kind of situation, Ethan committed suicide to protect his daughter's undercover status by making it look like Rena Mizunashi had confronted him for being a spy and had killed him as a result. When Gin arrived on the scene, he witnesses CIA Agent Barney who mourned on his fellow and also committed suicide thereafter. Rena Mizunashi then reports her fabricated story to the Black Organization which Gin believed and relayed to the Boss, promoting her to the Black Organization Codename "Kir".

Two years ago prior to the current timeline, FBI Agent Shuichi Akai who was on a infiltration mission, was promoted to the Black Organization Codename "Rye". He was called to work under Gin and a meeting for them was set in a warehouse. The FBI staked out the warehouse hoping to capture Gin as it was believed that he could lead them to the Boss. However, when FBI Agent Andre Camel mistakenly revealed himself in front of an old man who was actually Rum scouting the area in disguise, the Black Organization discovered Akai's true allegiance and Gin never appeared.

Apparently, Gin seems to have taken an interest on Kogoro Mouri after the latter's recent involvement in cases surrounding the Black Organization. He also demands to have him killed as soon as possible before he even grows to a greater threat.

Appearance[]

Gin appears to be a tall man with a slim build, pale skin, ruthless green eyes and long silver hair. Shinichi Kudo had put it that Gin has the eyes of someone who has easily killed many people without a care. At some point later, he receives a scar on his left cheek after a bullet from Shuichi Akai's rifle grazes him

He is usually seen wearing a black fedora with a gray headband, a black trench coat with its collar upturned to obscure a part of his face, a loose white turtleneck and most likely, a ballistic vest underneath. He also clothes himself with black trousers and black dress shoes.

Personality[]

Among the Executive Agents of the Black Organization, Gin is the most loyal: he follows the Boss' orders most closely and virtually never acts against the syndicate's greater interests. He is also one of the Black Organization's most dangerous operatives: Conan Edogawa miscalculating his intelligence, abilities, and speed of response have resulted in several very close calls and awry plans.

Gin is a merciless and efficient assassin. He has no compunctions about killing or threatening his fellow teammates. Fitting his icy personality, Gin's displayed range of emotions so far is relatively limited. Wearing a threatening smirk, he enjoys hunting traitors, cornering his targets and watching the plans he has concocted succeed. Although he seems to take satisfaction with taking out someone personally, Gin is also satisfied with orchestrating a target's death even if he does not pull the trigger himself. Moreover, he is not easily frustrated and takes setbacks in a good stride. Gin is also patient and cautious, preferring to wait until success is most likely. He does not like potential loose ends, preferring to get rid of anyone or anything doubtful. On top of that, Gin does not trust anyone and does not fully believe anything he does not witness himself.

Gin is a decisive and quick acting leader in his own regard. He keeps the Boss informed on current happenings and often consults about actions that may have potentially serious ramifications. Although obedient to the Boss, he acts on his own initiative on more than one occasion. Gin is more than willing to take matters into his own hands when he feels another member has endangered the syndicate.

Gin's effective leadership is shown in how he manages the diverse personalities of his team on missions. If Gin feels any frustration or scorn regarding the behavior or abilities of any of his teammates, he does not show it unless it is actively interfering with his plans or threatening the Black Organization. However, that does not stop him from being contemptuous about others behind their backs. The Black Organization's respect for Gin keeps them in line and coerces them into obeying orders. Gin also respects the desires of his teammates to a certain degree, even though he may distrust them.

Despite the aforementioned quality traits, Gin has two notorious weaknesses. He has difficulty remembering the faces and names of those he has killed. Vodka's memory makes up for his handicap somehow, making Gin notice connections later as a result. When Gin becomes suspicious of someone, he gets to work looking into their background. However, if his suspicions are proven wrong, he tends to lose interest completely.

Abilities[]

Intellectual Abilities[]

Gin is quite perceptive and intelligent. He can smell out traps his partner Vodka easily falls for. Gin is also good at deduction and relies on his good instinct. A few times so far, he correctly suspects that there is more to a situation than the evidence alone indicates. He also infers that "someone" is investigating the Black Organization and that there are likely spies within it, thus a purge is justified.

Physical Abilities[]

Gin seems to have undergone serious physical training, giving him incredible stamina and a high pain tolerance. He is also skilled in sniping and handguns, preferring a Beretta 92.

Plot Overview[]

Conan Arc[]

Roller Coaster Murder Case[]

Gin goes to Tropical Land with Vodka to complete a transaction with a company owner whom they were blackmailing for arms trafficking. The two board the Mystery Coaster before the meeting to observe from the pinnacle of the coaster if the businessman had come alone to the meeting spot below the Ferris Wheel. However, a murder occurs on the ride, forcing the two to remain at the scene as suspects. Anticipating that the police may hinder their transaction, Gin yells at Shinichi Kudo and Inspector Juzo Megure several times to hurry up and let them go. Shinichi then observes that Gin has the appearance and air of a cold-blooded killer. Eventually, they were released after Shinichi reveals and apprehends the culprit behind the murder.

Gin and Vodka's suspicious actions caused Shinichi to follow and encounter them completing the transaction with the businessman. Gin, who seems to have been keeping watch, knocks down Shinichi with a pipe he found and force-feeds him APTX 4869, shrinking him into Conan Edogawa.

¥1,000,000,000 Robbery[]

Before the current storyline, FBI Agent Shuichi Akai dated Akemi Miyano, the older sister of Shiho Miyano, in order to infiltrate the Black Organization. Akai's true allegiance was discovered later and he was expelled from the criminal syndicate. Initially, the Black Organization could not do anything to Akemi since they needed the loyalty of Sherry, who was very valuable as the lead researcher of the APTX 4869 Project.

Two years later, the Black Organization decided that the risk of her contact with Akai was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist that she was supposed to fail and Gin was put in charge of making a deal with her. Akemi Miyano was then told that the only way that she and her sister would be allowed to leave the Black Organization was to successfully pull off a 10 billion yen bank robbery.

After successfully completing the heist and tricking her into accidentally poisoning one of her colleagues, she confronts Gin at the shipping yard to complete the transaction. She tries to tell Gin to hold up the end of his bargain. However, he tells her the syndicate would not let her Shiho leave anyway because she was too valuable. He then kills Akemi and flees the scene.

Bullet-Train Bombing[]

Gin and Vodka are tasked with eliminating a former business partner who had become a liability, by tricking her into a transaction involving of what she thinks is information about 400 million yen worth of gold. The pair are supposed to receive a large case of money from the client who will be given a black attaché containing of what she believes is the gold information. However, the case actually contains a bomb rigged to explode when she calls a certain number on her mobile phone.

Conan, who was also at the bullet-train at the time, almost walks into Gin's legs when the duo boards the Shinkansen. Vodka then yells at Conan and Gin glares coldly, but neither recognize him. It is much later revealed that Gin tends to forget the faces of those he killed. Eventually, Conan bugs their seats as soon as they leave to go to make the transaction. After they return with the suitcase full of the client's money, Conan learns their codenames and overhears Gin explain to Vodka the details of the bombing plan.

Gin and Vodka disembark at Nagoya to avoid being caught in the explosion. Conan decided to follow them, however, he is stopped by Ran Mouri from chasing them. Conan then turns his attention to finding the bomb and successfully ejects the black case from the train before it explodes. Unfortunately, the client knows little about Gin, Vodka or the Black Organization, thus the police are unable to do anything.

Game Convention Case[]

Tequila calls Vodka and tells him to inform Gin that the briefcase exchange for the list of world's best programmers was successful.

Haibara Arc[]

Missing Older Brother Case[]

Gin and Vodka were supposed to eliminate Sherry after she decided to boycott APTX 4869's development, in opposition to sudden death of her sister, Akemi Miyano. The pair then pulls Shiho from her lab and handcuffs her to a pipe in a gas chamber to await the syndicate's judgment.

In an attempt to commit suicide, Sherry takes APTX 4869 and shrinks into a child instead. She then escapes through a rubbish chute and heads to the Kudo Residence where she is found by Professor Hiroshi Agasa. When Gin and Vodka return, the duo finds out that renegade scientist had escaped their clutches. The Black Organization is then ordered to search and murder the rebel scientist. Gin in particular is shown to have an obsession with capturing Sherry and killing her himself.

Hotel Party Murder Case[]

In a mere coincidence, Conan and Ai Haibara runs into Gin's car which was parked along the street. Conan attaches a transmitter inside, moment before Gin and Vodka return to the vehicle. After calling Professor Agasa to fetch them, Conan learns that the Black Organization plans to murder the Politician Shigehiko Nomiguchi, an order which Gin relays to Pisco and told him to use APTX 4869 when necessary. After a while, Gin found an auburn hair and deduced that it was Shiho's. He also found Conan's transmitter and destroyed it, mistaking it as Shiho's doing and was surprised that she took the initiative to approach them first.

Attempting to foil the assassination plot, Conan and Haibara went to Haido City Hotel to investigate. There, Pisco successfully assassinated the politician and locked Haibara in a wine storage room after noticing her resemblance to a young Shiho. Pisco was supposed to inform Gin 30 minutes after the assassination was successful. However, due to the police questioning him and other persons of interest, Gin and Vodka traced his laptop and went to the wine storage room themseves to investigate. While lurking around, Gin hears Shiho's heavy breathing and intercepted her at the roof when she tried to flee, shooting her many times. When Gin was about to kill her, Conan arrived in time and shot a sleeping dart at him. Gin, however, showed a resistance to it and shot himself in the arm so that he could stay conscious.

Gin then climbs down the chimney and confronts Pisco, revealing that he was caught on camera performing the assassination and the news has spread pointing him out as the culprit behind the murder. Fearing that Pisco may expose the Black Organization's existence to the public, the Boss ordered Gin to execute the latter. Eventually, he returned to his car along with Vodka and Vermouth, conversing their plans to capture Sherry.

Vermouth Arc[]

Bus Hijacking Case[]

While Gin and Vodka watches a performance in a bar, Vermouth disguises herself as a waiter and approaches Gin to tease him. Gin, who does not take Vermouth's antics much to his liking, almost stabs her with an ice pick and expresses his anger. The trio then discuss their plans to capture the renegade scientist, Sherry. Afterwards, Vermouth asks Gin if they could make a "Martini" tonight which is a cocktail mix of Gin and Vermouth, revealing that the two are or were in a sexual relationship with one another.

Meeting with Vodka[]

Two years ago prior to the current timeline, Suguru Itakura was forced by the Black Organization to complete a particular "program" that they were interested in. Itakura was supposed to meet with Vodka on the scheduled deadline give him the finished product. However, he was caught in a murder case and was killed before his supposed transaction with the operative. Conan, who pretends as Itakura, decided to meet with Vodka himself to intercept him and dig info on the Black Organization.

Upon arriving on the exchange point, Conan places the CD with a check sticking out on the prearranged locker. Moments later, Vodka arrives and takes the CD. However, he was stopped by Gin who held him at gunpoint, stating that the transaction was not supposed to happen until tomorrow.

As he examines the CD, Gin reveals that someone placed a tape on the CD's case in order to get Vodka's fingerprints. He also tells him that he was manipulated into taking a cigarette upon finding out that the person he was supposed to meet was not there, a tactic which was meant to identify Vodka's blood type using the saliva sample found on his tobacco. Gin then finds a tracker device hidden in the CD's case and destroys it, stating that whoever planted the device wishes to follow them and investigate their hideouts. Lastly, he places his hand above the CD's case and finds out that it is still emitting heat, meaning that traps were only set recently and that culprit behind them is still nearby. Conan, who is shocked with Gin's instincts and deduction, manages to hide in a coin locker and escapes their pursuit. The duo then flees the area upon finding out that Gin was "mistaken".

Halloween Party Case[]

The Boss orders Gin to look into Vermouth's suspicious movements related to Halloween Party aboard a ship, an order which he relays to Vodka instead. Gin, having no idea what Vermouth is up to, instructs Vodka to kill the operative if she does anything weird even if she is the Boss’s Favorite. Aboard the ship, a man blackmailed by Vermouth kills the captain, a murder case which was solved by Heiji Hattori disguised as Shinichi Kudo. Vodka initially reports Shinichi's presence to Gin, but then corrects the information when Heiji takes off his disguise.

The murderer then begins shouting that someone named Vermouth forced him to murder the captain. Vodka presumably reports this development to Gin, who relays the info to the Boss and instruct her to return. Vermouth, who was never aboard the ship in the first place, was badly injured by Shuichi Akai and calls Gin from a telephone booth for pickup since she is crippled. While on the phone, Gin asks her if she knows someone named Shinichi Kudo and lies, stating she does not anyone with that name.

Kir Arc[]

Black Organization vs. FBI[]

The Boss orders the assassination of the Politician Yasuteru Domon and Gin coordinates the mission. Gin's primary plan is to get Domon interviewed using Kir, have him sit down on a bench, where Chianti and Korn to kill him. While Gin's backup plan is to get a disguised Vermouth crash in front of Domon's car, after which Kir, Chianti, and Korn would kill Domon and his two bodyguards. Although both assassination plots were foiled by the combined efforts of Conan and the FBI, Gin discoverers the transmitter that Conan planted on Kir's shoe and assumes that the transmitter was set up by Kogoro. He contacts the Boss to inform about his discovery and requests his permission to kill him.

However, the assassination of Kogoro is interrupted by Conan whose soccer ball breaking Mouri's window distracts Chianti and Korn who were taking aim. Over the protests of Vermouth, Gin orders the two snipers to kill Conan as well for, as Vodka says, being suspicious. This too is interrupted when Shuichi Akai snipes the transmitter out from between Gin's fingers from 700 yards away. A brief exchange of gunfire ensues, but ends quickly after Akai shoots out Gin's scope and puts two bullets in his flak jacket. Gin realizes the disadvantage of the situation and orders the Black Organization to disperse without taking any more action against Conan or Kogoro. As the Black Organization flees the area, Gin assumes that Kir was captured by the FBI and that the bug was also planted by the latter. Despite the lack of evidence about Kogoro's connection to the FBI, Gin still expresses his residual suspicions about the Sleeping Detective.

Mysterious Job Case[]

While attempting to locate Kir's whereabouts throughout the city, Chianti asks Gin why the Boss promoted Kir in the first place. Gin stated that Kir had confronted a spy before and, in recognition of her loyalty and sheer savageness, the Boss promoted her to a Codenamed Agent. Moments later, Gin remembers the spy's surname which was "Hondou".

Kir Transport Case[]

When the Black Organization orchestrated a series of events to manipulate the FBI into revealing Kir's location, the FBI initiated a plan to transport Kir into another location. The three FBI Vans drive off with Chianti, Korn, and Vodka stalking them. Using thermal vision devices, they are able to see through the vans and upload the images to Gin who attempts to deduce which truck contains Kir. Vermouth follows Akai who is secretly tailing the second van, the vehicle being stalked by Chianti. However, Gin believed that the FBI would not do something obvious and Akai is luring them into a trap, causing them to believe that the first van Korn is stalking contains Kir. However, Gin stops them and reveals that Kir is in the van that Camel is driving, the one being stalked by Vodka.

Moments later, Kir wakes up from her coma and knocks Andre Camel unconscious, causing the car to crash. Once freed, she reunites with the other members of the Black Organization. Chianti then prepares to kill Camel. However, the vehicle explodes, attracting the attention of the public and forcing the Black Organization members to flee.

While fleeing the area, Kir asks Gin to spare the hospital and its employees. Gin grew suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that Akai did not make a strong move to retrieve Kir back from them, causing Gin to believe that Akai and his FBI colleagues are hiding something.

Foreign Suspect Case[]

Camel becomes a suspect in a coincidental murder case. With the FBI being distracted, the Black Organization took this advantage to orchestrate Akai's assassination. Gin, who relays his doubts to the Boss, plans a test of loyalty for Kir. He puts her at gun point and forces her to call Akai and meet him somewhere. Gin tells her that he would be watching the whole assassination and if Kir does anything suspicious, she would be killed.

Kir meets with Akai at Raiha Pass and eventually kills him. As they hear police sirens, Gin orders Kir to flee the area and becomes reassured of her allegiance to the syndicate. In truth, the Black Organization was fooled, with Kir conspiring with Akai to fake his own death.

Bourbon Arc[]

Department Store Bomber Case[]

Bourbon, who disguises himself as Shuichi Akai, appears before several FBI Agents in order to observe their reactions and verify his death. However, they become trapped inside a department store after a bomber has taken them hostage. When the Black Organization spots someone who looks like Akai, Gin and Vodka park outside the area. Soon after, Gin calls Kir and points a gun to her head, stating that he would kill her once they confirm that Akai is still alive..

Before Gin orders Chianti to shoot Scar Akai, Vermouth appears and tells Gin about Bourbon's plan to verify Akai's death, which the Boss authorized them to do so. Scar Akai notices Chianti taking aim at him and smirks, which makes her lose her aim and allows Scar Akai to disappear into the crowd. Gin lowers the gun from Kir's head and decides to drop the assassination attempt, commenting how Bourbon likes doing what he pleases.

Mystery Train[]

After finding out from Vermouth that Sherry was going to board the Bell Tree Express Train, Gin and Vodka concocted their own plan to eliminate Sherry by placing enough explosives at the train's destination station to blow up the entire vehicle. Meanwhile, Vermouth and Bourbon boarded the train with a separate plan in mind to catch Sherry.

When Vodka wondered how Vermouth and Bourbon were going to get off the train before it arrived at the station, Gin stated that he does not know how nor care about their fates. Vermouth's attempted assassination of Sherry wound up stopping the train before it arrived at its supposed destination, rendering Gin's plan ineffective. Gin then asked for confirmation if Sherry was killed, which Vermouth endorsed only to find out soon after that she had been tricked. As Vermouth kept this deception a secret, Gin believes Shiho to be dead.

Rum Arc[]

Soul Detective Murder Case[]

After the case was solved, Gin comments how Rum screwed up in Kohji Haneda's murder from 17 years ago. He is also intrigued by the fact that Kogoro Mouri decided to investigate the aforementioned murder and suggests the detective to be finished off before he becomes even more dangerous.

Yusaku Kudo's TV Show Case[]

After Vermouth investigated Yusaku Kudo, Gin fetches her and asks the operative what was she up to. Vermouth reveals that she had ran an errand from Rum, who considered someone a threat to the Black Organization and demanded him to be investigated.

FBI Serial Murder Case[]

When several FBI Agents were killed after the Black Organization decoded their communication to rendezvous, the FBI planted a fake code in an attempt to lure them out. However, Rum was able to detect such fake code, making his subordinates counter trap and attack the FBI Agents instead. Andre Camel, who manages to escape the Black Organization's pursuit, retreats and finds shelter in Umizarujima Island. Although the collaborative efforts of Subaru Okiya and Conan managed to keep Camel hidden for a while, Rum figured out their strategy and instructed Gin to burn the island, successfully luring out Camel into the open. The Black Organization, however, was fooled into thinking that they have successfully eliminated the FBI Agent.

After the events of the FBI Serial Murder Case, Rum was scolded by the Boss, stating that their actions at Umizarujima Island stood out a bit than they should have been. Despite receiving an earful, Rum also stated that the Boss is pleased with the recent turn of events, commending him and his subordinates for successfully "killing" the man that the FBI desperately protected.
